Q. Can I charge for other services when I rent my RV?

A. YES! There are many related services which are typically offered to renters.

  • Pet Fee – Pets are great fun on trips but can cause a lot of damage. Try to screen the owner and pet first to decide if you want to allow pets. Collect and extra deposit or cleaning fee.
  • Kitchen Supplies– Pots, pans, plates, silverware, spices, cleaning supplies and so on....
  • Bedroom Linens – Sheets, pillows, blankets
  • Bathroom Supplies –Towels, TP, soap, and shampoo.
  • Mileage – Most rental contracts include 100 free miles / day, with a per-mile fee, typically around $.30/mile.
  • Generator Usage – The average generator fee is $3/hr.
  • Entertainment – Put together a selection of loaner CD’s and Videos, and offer it for a fee.
  • Bike Rack – Consider renting the bikes to go with it…or perhaps scooters. Scooters are very popular in campgrounds.
  • Lawn Chairs
  • Airport/Bus/Train Pickup - Your renter may be coming in from out of town, collect extra fees for pick up service.
  • Fluid Top Off -Many renters will find it inconvenient to top off propane, diesel fuel, and water.
  • Dumping - Many renters will not empty the grey and black holding tanks. You can charge extra for this service.

Q. How do I upload photos?

A. You will need digital photos from your digital camera or scanned images from paper prints. Once you have your images uploaded to your computer, you will need to use photo editing software to reduce your images to under 100K in size. Remember where you stored your images. Login to your Member Home Page and click on Add/Edit photos.

Q. How often can I expect to rent my RV?

A. It is not a good idea to rent "back-to-back" on the same day because you should allow at least a half day turnaround to prepare it for the next renter and for the next training/checkout process and any maintenance required. It is good practice to maintain a good relationship with local RV mechanics so they can provide good contacts, and help you grow your rental business.
You may also consider RV wash and cleaning services to quickly prepare your RV for the next renter.

Q. My RV is complicated. How can I be sure the renter can handle using it?

A. If your RV is large and complex, you may want to limit your renters to drivers with Class “A” RV experience. Talk to your renter, and try to determine if he/she understands the features. Consider training materials found here: www.rvsafety.org Some common training practices that will insure safe and profitable rentals. Prepare checklists and use them during the walk through. Consider using a signature line at the bottom of each check list, for renter signoffs. MBA RV Rental Insurance offers sample checklists:

  • Fuel
  • Propane
  • Grey Water
  • Black Water
  • Generator
  • Electrical hookup
  • Driver "cockpit" Controls
  • Audio Visual system
  • Slides
  • Jack
  • Awning – (Many rental agencies remove or disable awnings. Train your renters how to use awnings correctly.)

Create simplified explanations from owner's manuals and laminate them for easy use in the RV. Keep owners’ manuals for each system in the RV easily available for the renter.

Q. How does insurance work?

A. For a private party, there are currently two options:

  1. Insurance Binder from Renter’s Auto Insurance Company. Require an “insurance binder” issued by the renter’s insurance company. The binder states that the renter’s auto insurance company is responsible (primary) for your motorhome, and any damage they do while in it. The binder must include increased coverages due to the value of the motorhome. A sample of the required binder verbiage is provided in the member resources area. Most major insurance companies will provide renters with a binder for a modest fee. WARNING: Not all insurance companies will offer this service. You must be prepared to screen potential renters for their ability to provide the insurance binder. For that reason, commercial RV rental insurance can be obtained.

  2. RV Rental Insurance. The recommended insurance strategy involves purchasing commercial RV renter insurance. MBA Insurance offers plans that cover you, your RV, and your renters. Commercial RV Rental insurance replaces your current recreational RV insurance policy. MBA plans also simplify the claims process, and can remove the insurance binder requirement. Call MBA for details 800-622-2201. MBA is dedicated to the RV rental industry, offering classes in RV rental, reservation software, RV rental forms, and manuals.
